Acne Scars

Acne scars: atrophic scars, raised scars. Treatment regimen: chemical peels, laser, microneedling

What is it?

Acne scars are long-term marks left on the skin after acne lesions heal. They develop due to damage to the deeper layers of the skin and impaired healing processes. Here are the main types:

  • Atrophic Scars: Depressed areas on the skin, including ice-pick scars, boxcar scars, and rolling scars.
  • Raised Scars (Hypertrophic/Keloid): Elevated, thickened skin caused by excessive collagen during healing.
  • Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: Darkened spots that aren’t scars but result from healed acne.

Treatment options

  • Chemical Peels: Removes the outer layer to promote fresh skin growth.
  • Microneedling: Stimulates collagen production for smoother skin.
  • Topical Products: Ingredients like retinoids or vitamin C improve scar texture and tone.
  • NeoClear by Aerolase® Treatment: An advanced device that targets acne and promotes collagen production for scar reduction.

Both peels can be performed individually or in a series and are often paired with Aerolase Neo or microneedling for enhanced results.

Chemical peels can also be stacked in the SAME treatment with Aerolase Neo for enhanced results.

what is MICRONEEDLING (and PRP)?

Microneedling helps improve acne scars by stimulating the skin's natural healing processes and boosting collagen production. Here's how it works specifically for acne scars:

  1. Microneedling: The tiny punctures created by the microneedling device break down scar tissue and encourage the skin to repair itself. This process stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, which smoothens the skin and reduces the visibility of depressed scars (like atrophic or rolling scars).
  2. PRP Enhancement: When used in combination with growth factors in Platelet-Rich Plasma, it further accelerates the healing process. PRP promotes cell regeneration and tissue repair, which helps restore skin texture and diminish the appearance of scars more effectively than microneedling alone.

Together, these techniques not only reduce acne scars but also improve skin tone, elasticity, and overall texture. Over time and with multiple sessions, the results become more noticeable, offering a smoother and more radiant complexion.

What is neoclear with aerolase?

NeoClear by Aerolase uses cutting-edge 650-microsecond technology to offer safe and effective acne treatment for people of all ages and skin types. This device tackles three major acne factors—excess oil, inflammation, and p. acnes bacteria—eliminating the need for multiple treatments or medications. Its advanced settings deliver energy deep into the skin, reducing oil production, soothing inflammation, and eradicating bacteria. Additionally, the heat energy stimulates collagen formation, helping diminish acne scars and enhancing skin radiance.

What sets NeoClear apart is its lack of side effects, comfort, and rapid results, often visible after one session with combination treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments will I need?
Most patients start with 4 to 6 NeoClear sessions for active acne. Acne scar treatment may require additional sessions, depending on the depth and severity of the scarring.

Results can vary based on whether you’re undergoing NeoClear as a monotherapy or as part of a multi-therapy treatment plan (e.g., with microneedling, chemical peels, or topical regimens). While NeoClear has no downtime, other combination therapies may involve some recovery.

For the most personalized plan, we recommend you schedule a consultation. Your clinician will tailor the treatment to your skin goals, desired results, and comfort with downtime.

Does it help with active acne too?
Yes! What sets NeoClear apart is that we can use this laser with active acne.  It also helps to soften the appearance of acne scars by stimulating collagen production and improving overall skin tone and texture.

Is it safe for all skin types?
Yes—NeoClear is safe for all skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–VI), including sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Is the treatment painful?
Not at all. NeoClear is very well tolerated, with most patients describing the feeling as warm or tingly. No numbing is needed.

Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime with Aerolase Neoclear as a monotherapy. You may experience some temporary redness, but most patients return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.

When will I see results?
You may notice improvement in acne and skin clarity after just 1–2 sessions, with optimal results visible after completing the full treatment series.  Acne scars will take longer results to show and may require more than the initial 4-6 sessions especially for patients with active acne.

Can I use this if I’m already on acne medication?
In many cases, yes—but it’s best to consult with your provider. NeoClear can be used alone or to complement topical/oral acne treatments.
